"Look, I'm a coach, I'm not Harry Potter,". "He is magical, but in reality there is no magic. Magic is fiction and football is real."
- Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid coach after Real Madrid drew their 1st game of the season 0-0 against Mallorca
Way back on 31st May 2002 when the 17th FIFA World Cup began I watched my 1st game of football (on TV ofcourse, would love to watch a game at a stadium someday). Ranked number 1 then and champions of FIFA World Cup 1998 France against minnows Senegal ranked number 42 in the world and playing their 1st and only ever world cup till date. And in normal circumstances you would say world number 1 thrashed Senegal then you would be wrong because Senegal beat France 1-0 and what a sight it was as France crashed out of the tournament without a single win and without scoring a single goal. This was when football got interesting and I realized that even the mighty had a huge fall.
Football or Soccer as called in some parts of the world could be described as a game of uncertainties. More than less you would not be able to predict what would be the course of the game or the final result. The passion, the enthusiasm, the energy of the game keeps me and millions of football fans around the world glued to ‘The Beautiful Game’. In a game when 90 minutes are being played there would hardly be a moment you would want to miss. You know in 90 minutes where your favorite team is heading. IN or OUT.
Football has also had its share of scandals. Be it Maradona’s ‘Hand Of God’ against England in 1986 or the 2006 Italian League scandal or the recent FIFA bribery scandal. But to be honest football is bigger than all of this. 90 minutes, 22 players, one goal, that’s all that matters. This has been the spirit why football fans are growing round the globe.
